Overview

Nestled in the heart of Bessemer, Alabama, Wagon Wheel Deli and Grill offers a refreshing take on classic American fare. This modest spot on 1st Avenue N might be easy to miss, but its charm lies in the authentic, made-to-order experience that the owner personally crafts. The grill is the centerpiece, where the owner works solo, balancing order-taking, cooking, and serving with genuine care and dedication—a true labor of love that translates into every bite.

The menu leans heavily on beloved American staples such as burgers and fries but prides itself on fresh ingredients and generous portions. Standout dishes include their Bacon Cheeseburger and the uniquely flavored Wagon Wheel Cheeseburger, both boasting a rich, satisfying taste. Fries come classic or dressed up with ranch, complementing the main plates perfectly. For those craving something lighter, their Greek and Chef Salads bring a crisp, Mediterranean influence, adding refreshing balance to the hearty offerings.

Beyond the food, Wagon Wheel Deli and Grill creates an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a vintage diner, drawing in locals and visitors alike. The space is cozy with a handful of tables, encouraging a casual dine-in experience, though takeout remains popular—especially during the workweek. This spot appeals strongly to those who appreciate home-cooked meals, where someone takes the time to make every dish fresh and flavorful.

Customers frequently praise the attentive service and personal touch that the owner brings. Stories of complimentary ice cream, friendly conversation, and freshly made gyros with authentic tzatziki highlight the kind of connection rare in fast casual dining. This blend of American comfort food with subtle Mediterranean twists elevates the experience beyond your typical deli or grill.

If you find yourself near Bessemer and crave honest, thoughtfully prepared food served with warmth and a smile, Wagon Wheel Deli and Grill is a must-visit. It’s the perfect spot for those who value authenticity, quality ingredients, and a glimpse into a small business where passion drives every plate.

This little place is a bit off the beaten path, but I was quite surprised that it was quick and tasty, even though it's mainly a one man show! It was my second time eating there, and it won't be my last. There are a few tables for dining in, but on a Monday, most patrons were takeout orders.

The owner took our order, cooked our food and brought it out to us. Everything was cooked fresh to order and it was delicious. As you can see in the picture the servings were very generous. We will definitely be back for breakfast and will go for lunch to try the gyros!!!!

This was the best costumer experience ever. The owner runs the whole place by himself and you can see how much he puts into his business. The food was amazing, and he even gave us free ice cream after we ate. I’ll definitely be returning!!

Just left here after having an amazing gyro and the best onion rings I’ve had in recent memory. Nothing frozen here, it was all made fresh. The tzatziki is super on point. The owner was cooking and did a phenomenal job on the grill and was charming as well. I love supporting small businesses and it’s even more rewarding when they are excellent at what they do. If you are in the Bessemer area I strongly recommend stopping by, you won’t regret it!

Awesome vintage setting, great food! Had the Philly and the wagon wheel cheeseburger. Both were delicious. They seem to take American dishes and add a Mediterranean twist. Definitely worth your time and money. It doesn't disappoint!

I have just recently heard about this place. Their food is great, but for the area, the food is a little pricey. I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and it was amazing. My daughter ordered a Club sandwich and we were all surprised it comes on a hogey bun. We won't be ordering a Club again. It has a totally different taste. For 4 of us to eat, the costs was $50. We all got 1 sandwich, fries and a drink. It's fine occasionally but if you work in downtown Bessemer and plan to eat lunch there, it's going to cost you about $20. Once a month maybe?
